Discover Sumi-e: Exclusive Art Prints from Lithobee
Uncover the history of sumi-e and explore Lithobee's exquisite collection of Japanese-style art prints.

Minimalism with maximal expression. That is the art of sumi-e, also known as ink painting. This artform, unique in its evolution across Japan, captures life, spirit, and nature, with monochromatic ink. The dark and meaningful aesthetic of monochrome interspaced with bursts of colour is the signature of sumi-e.

We here at Lithobee are delighted to show you the story of this gorgeous artform alongside some of this week’s featured pieces. We’re all about giving you new ways to enjoy timeless styles.

Sumi-e: A Brief History

More than one thousand years ago brush painting began in China as a natural evolution from the Han characters which were drawn out on paper. The same inks and brushes used to write in fine calligraphy were used to create the earliest forms of brush painting.

The practice evolved alongside Taoism in China and Shinto in Japan, then later Buddhism, imbuing the artform with its own meditative and spiritual philosophy. The idea is reflective and simplistic, with each stroke of the brush done with deliberate intention to convey the correct amount of information.

Characteristics of Sumi-e Art

Sumi-e is instantly recognisable in its style, much more so than the various eras of painting across the west. It is bold in black and white, predominantly focusing on natural scenes such as bamboo forests, waves, and animals, though occasionally featuring figures in silhouette. Sumi-e suggests the details to us through the use of its brush strokes and leaves our minds to fill the space in between, much like an impressionist in the west uses colour.

The Artistry of the Brush in Sumi-e

No higher importance can be placed on any one component than that of the brush. Both in writing and in art across the east, the brush is the soul of the creator. Only it has the ability to translate both the bold and the subtle movement of the wrist, the light or heavy hand. Though fine and heavily pigmented ink is also demanded, the brushes themselves are as much a delicate craft as the artwork they go on to create. To this day these brushes are expensive and handcrafted, as not a single hair may be too long or short, misaligned or unwieldy.

Techniques and Innovations

Like any master of craft, sumi-e artists must train for many years to perfect their brushstrokes. Paper and ink are not forgiving, there is no room for pencils and sketches in this artform. Each stroke must be done with forethought and precision. It is said that to master Sumi-e is both a technical and a philosophical statement.
